A trunked radio system gets its name from the trunk used in commercial telephone systems A trunk is a communications path between two or more points, typically between the telephone company central offices The telephone trunk is shared by several different users, but each user is not aware of this sharing of lines The caller places a call to another party, and the call is completed Radio communication over a trunked system is similar to the telephone system The transmitting and receiving radio units can be thought of as the calling and called parties Instead of telephone lines, the radio system uses radio channels to place calls As with the telephone system, the radio users are not aware of which trunk or radio channel they are communicating over Trunking a multichannel radio system increases the efficiency of the radio and the radio channels The concept behind trunking is very simple Trunked radio is the pooling of several radio channels so that all the users in a given area have automatic access to any free channel The result is a system that can provide private, wide-area, wireless communication to many different users without interference or interruption Trunked radio is very different from the old conventional radio where you had to contend with interference and congestion Trunked radio, the least expensive wireless service, allows both dispatch communication and the ability to place and receive phone calls, similar to cellular A trunked radio system always comprises several radio channels One channel acts as the Control Channel (CC), while the others carry traffic The control channel is used for registrations, the transmission of status messages, and for call requests This is not unlike the cellular, radio-based system using the paging and control channels in a cellular operation The difference is that in a cellular radio network, there are several (19 21) channels set aside, whereas in trunked radio only one channel is needed (see Figure 19-2 ).

The ProClarity tools represent true analytics applications, offering basically unlimited abilities to work with the data in Analysis Services cubes The rich graphical capabilities of the ProClarity tools are unmatched by any other tool The capabilities of Excel 2007 are arguably better at dealing with grid data, but the charts in ProClarity are extremely powerful and flexible A complete discussion of the ProClarity applications could be a book unto itself, but I discuss the basics of performing analysis with ProClarity in 6 Figure 2-3 shows an example of some of the graphical capabilities of ProClarity

One of the most convenient features of the modified R/C servos is that they can still be controlled directly by a standard R/C receiver The easiest way to make a remote-control mini sumo is use a two-stick R/C transmitter, and then attach the R/C receiver and the R/C battery to the top of the mini sumo Turn the transmitter on, and adjust the trim settings to make sure the wheels are not moving when both sticks on the transmitter are centered Then, drive the mini sumo around like a tank each stick controls each wheel To get better driving control where one stick is used for forward and reverse control, and the other stick is used for turning

Figure 19-2: Control and talk channels in a trunked radio system Upon requesting a call, a talk path is allocated on an exclusive basis to the subscriber from a pool of radio channels The call processed on this channel If the trunked radio system receives additional call requests, a different channel is allocated to the calling party from the pool As soon as all channels are in use, new call requests are stored in a queue When a channel becomes available, the requested call is switched to the first available channel on a first-in, first-out basis This method means that a call request need only be sent once If the call cannot be set up immediately, the system stores the call request and processes it later

left or right, an elevon/v-tail mixer can be placed between the R/C receiver and the R/C servos The mixer can be obtained at most hobby stores At this point, you will be ready to compete in any remote-control mini sumo contest An interesting thing to note: the bot you ve just built is functionally the same as a two-wheeled BattleBots-type machine The mini sumo is just a micro version of a two-wheeled BattleBot, and it will drive the same way

The Control Channel (CC)

Autonomous mini sumos are probably the most exciting ones to make The primary difference between the autonomous mini sumo and the remote-control mini sumo is that the autonomous mini sumo runs completely on its own How well it performs depends on how well the software is written, how well the sensors work, and how well your opponent s autonomous bot works The main component of an autonomous mini sumo is the microcontroller that is used for the bot s brain The next question that comes up is which microcontroller to use The fastest way to start a microcontroller holy war is to ask a room full of bot builders, What s the best microcontroller You will get as many different answers as there are people in the room There really is no best microcontroller, because they will all work They all have their advantages and disadvantages In our opinion, the best microcontroller is the one that you are most comfortable with The examples in the following sections will use a Basic Stamp 1 from Parallax, Inc (wwwparallaxinccom) The Basic Stamp 1 was selected because it s a good microcontroller; it is relatively easy to learn how to use; and, most of all, it has been proven to be an effective microcontroller on champion mini sumos

Each radio cell consists of a Trunked Radio Exchange and a Radio Base Station (RBS) The Trunked Radio Exchange can be used as a Master System Controller (MSC) or as a Trunking System Controll er (TSC) The Trunked Radio Exchange manages the radio channels of the Radio Base Station(s) One of these channels is used as the CC The SMR base is shown in Figure 19-3
