Once the DSV is ready, the cube is built The basic structure of the cube is similar or identical to the DSV, but then the cube can be greatly expanded Dimensions can have hierarchies added to them Cubes can contain calculations that would be difficult or impossible to do using relational tables Cubes may have key performance indicators, actions, perspectives, and other features available only to cubes; features that are simply not available in relational databases Finally, a cube must be processed in order to read the data from the source system or systems and store it in a structure built for the speed of retrieval Aggregations are often calculated at this time Many organizations perform nightly or weekly updates, although monthly updates are not uncommon, nor is it uncommon to perform incremental updates throughout the day if the need for timely data is high Finally, once the cube is built, consumers are ready to begin accessing the data and reaping the benefits of the BI project The rest of this book is dedicated to the tools that allow end users to access the data and make sense of it The next chapter will introduce scorecards and key performance indicators, techniques often used by higher level management, but accessible to anyone

Figure 26-1: A typical T1 carrier installation After the circuit is installed and the carrier is terminated, the customer then generates traffic (voice, data, video, etc) across the circuit This traffic is carried on the carrier at a digital rate, or what is called the Digital Signal level 1 (DS-1) DS-1 operates at a Digital Signaling rate of 1544 Mbps The traffic is therefore called a DS-1 (Note in many cases this may be annotated as DS1) One can therefore see that there is a difference between the physical carrier and the signaling rate of the traffic carried on the circuit

DS-1 operates in a framed format (some cases exist where a customer may request a nonframed format, but this is rare) The framer establishes the frame in a device called a Channel Service Unit (CSU) A frame consists of 193 bits of information created in a 125 seconds In a DS-1 there are 24 time slots associated with the signal Each time slot carries 8 bits of user information When the CSU sets up the frame and has 24 slots of 8 bits each, it then adds one overhead bit for framing delimitation This creates the 193 bits referred to above 24 channels @ 8 bits per channel + 1 framing bit = 1 frame

s I discussed in the first chapter, there are many different categories of business users These various users may need different information or they may need the same information as other users, but need it presented using different techniques One of the most common ways to present information to users is through the use of a scorecard Scorecards represent summarizations of a large amount of data, created specifically to provide a quick snapshot of the overall health of the business or an individual department Scorecards are usually aimed at business decision makers, although they can be used at any level of the organization A scorecard used in business is similar to the report cards that students take home to show their parents Parents are able to look at a single, simple piece of paper that shows the grade average in each class Parents do not have to pour through a stack of individual assignments, checking the grade for each one and calculating the averages on their own Instead, in a single glance, a parent can see the scores in all of their child s classes and get an immediate feel for how well their son or daughter is doing School report cards also might include additional information, such as the student s ability to get along with others, their attitude in class, and so forth Similarly, business scorecards may show the health and trend for that particular metric, not just its value This means that a quick glance gives a view of the overall business health and the ways that the various metrics are trending These metrics that are tracked are called Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs, are the metrics shown in a scorecard There are different types of scorecards, which will be discussed later in this chapter, but all the scorecards will contain KPIs KPIs are the primary drivers of a business and are similar to the measures discussed in 3 In fact, many measures are also used as KPIs, although KPIs have additional attributes It is important to understand the difference between KPIs and measures and how they are used
