Microsoft SQL Server 2005 ships with a robust, enterprise-scale ETL tool called SQL Server Integration Services, or SSIS SSIS creates what are called packages, and each package contains some piece of the ETL process Imagine writing a book; an author could open up a word processor and type the entire book in a single document Instead, most often, the author creates a separate file for each chapter because it is easier to maintain and edit Similarly, a single SSIS package could contain the entire ETL process, but typically it does not Instead, the developers creating the ETL process create numerous packages, each providing a few steps of the entire process This makes the entire ETL flow easier to maintain and allows for much better reuse The flow can be changed as necessary and the different packages can be run in different orders depending on the needs of the incoming data Each package is broken up into to major areas: control flow and data flow Control flow is what it sounds like: it controls the overall flow of this particular package In the control flow area, there are containers and task which can be added to the flow; tasks do something specific while containers group together multiple tasks For example, there are tasks that send emails (possibly due to completion or an error condition), run other packages, execute SQL statements, FTP files, and more There are containers for looping through the tasks placed in them and containers that ensure tasks are run in a particular sequence As one task is completed, it can then flow to other tasks, and it may flow differently based on whether the task succeeded or failed One of the tasks used most often in the Control Flow is the Data Flow Task, which opens another editor window Once again, the developer is presented with many controls There are controls to connect to both source and destination data sources, whether those sources are relational databases, XML files, Excel spreadsheets, text.

documents, and so forth In addition to the data sources and destinations, there are many controls for data transformations These include such items as conditional splits, fuzzy lookups, merging, sorting, handling slowly changing dimensions, and so forth A simple example of an SSIS package for a warehouse refresh might be one in which the first part of the flow executes SQL tasks to empty the star schema tables After this step, data flow tasks are called One task might grab data from a particular dimension table and load that data Another data flow might pull data from multiple sources, convert some columns to a standard format, and place that data in a dimension table Another data flow task might handle a slowly changing product dimension Finally, a data flow task might load the fact table, looking for any records with key violations Any bad records might be placed in a temporary table and the control flow could email the data warehouse administrator that some records failed to load properly An example of a simple flow can be seen in Figure 3-5

Quite a bit of discussion regarding wireless communications has already been covered in earlier chapters However, a combination of two separate services and technologies are merging as new services for broadband communications These two services include long haul communications and the use of personal communications services The technologies include the use of satellite and the cellular concepts combined Worldwide communications services can be achieved by these two combined services, therefore some diligent effort should be made to understand just what is happening in this arena This truly brings home the concept of communications from anywhere to anywhere The thought of being out in the middle of a lake and receiving a call, or rafting down a river and making a call, boggles the mind This is especially true when thinking about some of the more rural areas in the world where no telephone service infrastructure exists today Yet, in a matter of a few years these remote locations, on mountaintops, in forests, in valleys, or on the sea will all be reachable within a moment s notice The infrastructure of a wired world will not easily lend itself to this need, due to timing and cost issues Therefore, the use of a wireless transmission system is the obvious answer However, the use of cellular and personal communications devices still leaves a lot to be desired First, the deployment of these services is always going to be in the major metropolitan areas, where the use and financial payback will be achieved Thus, in the remote areas it will be decades, if not longer, until the deployment ever works its way close to the remote areas Enter the ability to see the world from above the skyline!
